The care of low birth weight infants is most especially critical from birth up until the baby reaches the standard weight of a nine month old baby. While the infant is in this critical stage of development, those “enrolled” in the KMC program requires that skin to skin contact with the mother (or father) be undertaken soon after birth.
One way of insuring a constant that skin to skin contact is through the use of the KMC tube blouse for the mother and for all other family members who will be assisting in the care of the infant.
The KMC tube blouse provides the following advantages:
Infant is safely tucked-in without danger of falling out or sliding out of position.
Provides constant body warmth required by infant.
Infant is cradled, safe and sound, when mother is asleep at night
Boosts the mother's confidence to take care of a low birth weight baby.
Promotes mother-infant bonding.
Propagates sustained breastfeeding among mothers.
Mother need not hold on to the infant, thereby freeing her to do household chores while providing KMC.
Fashionable and can be used even outside the house or in the company of others.
Comfortable to wear, easy to put on, and washable.
How to Use the KMC Tube Blouse
Always use the tube blouse together with pants or skirt. Whether you use pants or skirts, make sure that these are tight around the waist so that the tube blouse can be secured properly. Have a loose over-blouse to wear to cover the baby and mother.
Wear tube blouse and tuck it inside your pants or skirt. Make sure that your pants or skirt is comfortably tight around the waistline.
Tuck in your baby by placing the baby in skin to skin and chest to chest position inside your tube blouse, with the head just above the tube blouse. Make sure that the legs and arms are comfortable in a “frog-like” position and the head turned either to the left or right side with the neck slightly extended to enable easier breathing.
Put a bonnet on the baby to keep the head warm. Then put on an over-blouse to further protect mother and baby from harsh light and the elements.
