Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is a method of helping premature and low-birth-weight newborns to survive and experience quality care from their own mothers (or fathers), with or without intensive care. Mostly used in developing countries, it increases the small baby’s chances for survival through prolonged skin-to-skin contact, exclusive breastfeeding and increased interaction with the parents. Through this intervention, hospitals lacking in equipment and resources are able to improve outcomes and send patients home faster and safer, while also reducing cost of care for the family and the institution.

Fostering Resilience and Sustainability in KMC
On 16 - 17 November, 2020, Kangaroo Mother Care Foundation Philippines with the Asia-Oceania KMC Network will host an international webinar in celebration of World Prematurity Day 2020. The webinar will be held in two, two-hour sessions over two days, from 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM, Philippine Standard Time (PST). Over the course of the webinar, participants will learn more about current global programs for the newborn, for small babies, as well as the implementation status of KMC. Attendees will be able to recognize the various roles of the healthcare worker, as individual KMC practitioners, program implementers, educators, and champions of the KMC intervention. They will also learn strategies employed by global organizations, development partners, and country leaders in sustaining the KMC practice.
